According to Google, it takes 44 hours of straight driving to get from New York to LA. In this post, I’d like to consider the time value of that trip alone. In other words, we won’t even get into the lodging, fuel, and other expenses (we’re going to look at those in future posts).

Don't lose work time driving--ship your car with Nationwide!Today, it’s all about time? How much is your time worth?

If you drive 12 hours of day, that is still four days of work you’re going to miss. But let’s say you’re going to drive the weekend, too, so now it’s only two days of work. So let’s agree that driving from New York to LA is going to deep-six 16 hours of work time.

The federal minimum wage is $7.25. Your trip across the country is thus going to cost you a minimum of $116.00. If you take off 32 hours, which is more realistic (unless you plan to drive like a demon for four days straight and go right back to work), that’s $232.00. If we use a higher wage of $10.00, which is more realistic for a lot of people, that’s $320.00. But there are a lot of people out there making $20.00 an hour, which brings the total up to $640.00. Now if you’re a busy exec making $100.00 an hour, then you will lose a whopping $3,200.00 in work time on your drive.

Keep in mind that the above is still a conservative estimate! A lot of people would take five days to make this trip, and they would finish exhausted and need further time off from work just to rest up. So if you’re making a good, average wage, you will be losing several hundred dollars in work time.

Of course, the above assumes that you have the time to take off work in the first place. Most people don’t have that luxury. That’s why Nationwide is here to help!
