The best part of road trips for me as a kid was getting to eat out all the time. And my very all-time favorite restaurant to eat at was Cracker Barrel! Of course, this was before I had to worry about trip expenses.

Now that I’ve grown up, the prospect of eating out on road trips comes with the drawback of having to pay for it. Especially if you’re driving from New York to LA, eating out can get pretty pricey! The price will vary depending on where you stop to eat, so I’ve looked at a few different methods.

The first is the Cracker Barrel method of eating good food for a low price–typically under $10. If you ate at Cracker Barrel the entire trip–we’re assuming it’s a five day journey–that means your food expense is $150 or less.

The second is the junk food pit stop method, eating at fast food restaurants the whole way. You can get a McDonald’s #1 Big Mac, drink, and medium fries for $4.99. That means a five-day diet of the junk food pit stop method comes out to around $74.85.

The last is a combination of the two. If you split your meals with half of the mouth-watering Cracker Barrel method and half of the greasy junk food pit stop method, the cost is somewhere around $112.43.

Now, even if you weren’t driving from New York to LA, you’d still have to pay for your meals. Let’s say you pay $40 for five days worth of groceries. So we have to subtract that amount from each of our methods to find how much the extra travel food cost is. The Cracker Barrel method comes out to be $110. The junk food pit stop method is down to $34.85. And the combo method calculates to be $72.43.

Although, if you eat all of your meals at Cracker Barrel anyway, then this extra cost does not apply to you!
